Helium is a non-toxic, monoatomic gas that holds the second place on Mendeleev’s periodic table of elements. This is a gas without color and smell, and it is also much lighter than oxygen and carbon dioxide.

The molecular mass of helium is 4, while it is 32 for oxygen and 44 for carbon dioxide. This allows us to conclude how light helium is. So balloons filled with monoatomic gas can fly, while a mixture of oxygen and carbon dioxide weighs down the balloon, making it sink to the ground. The lighter the content of the balloon, the more chance that it will fly.
