Explanation:

Vernier caliper is a device used for measurement of length. It can measure diameter of a sphere or cylinder, length, depth and breadth of a block.

Vernier caliper has following measure parts,

Main scale: Main scale of vernier is a metal scale having scale of centimeter at one edge and inches at other end. It carries inner and outer jaws for measurement of different objects.

Vernier scale: Vernier scale is sliding window on a metal strip.

Upper and lower jaws: Upper and lower jaws are used to measure outer and inner diameter of the cylinder and ring. Upper jaw can further be used to measurement of all types of block.

Depth measurement: It is used for measurement of depth of a block.

Steps for measurement:

  • Place a glass block in between the lower jaws.
  • Observe the zero of vernier caliper say it coincides with m division. Thus, main scale reading is m.
  • Now observe the division on vernier scale exactly coinciding with any of main scale division. Let n is the division on vernier scale division. Thus, vernier scale reading = n × least count.
  • Least count =  \frac{ one main scale division }{ total division on vernier scale}
  • Total reading = m + (n × least count)
