was lucky as a child. From K-12 I only had to walk an half-mile to each of my schools. K-8 was one school in one direction and 9–12 was another school in another direction.

However, several of my friends had to walk 2+ miles one way to Kindergarten and then first grade until two new elementary schools opened in our area. That was back in the Pre School Bus era. If you were in a town/city there were No school buses and you walked, road a bike, took public transportation or had a parent drop you off on their way to work, but you walked home after school
