Heya Mate,

Follow these steps:

BASICS...

1. First, learn how to hold the guitar correctly.
2. Tune the guitar
3. Practice fretting the strings.
4. Hold the pick. It isn't necessary to have a pick, but its more comfortable

CHORDS...

1. Learn first position chords.
2. Learn finger placement for the chords.
3. Practice getting a clean sound from every string in the chord.
4. Strum with loose, relaxed motion.
5. Learn barre chords.

STICKING WITH IT..

1. Manage the finger pain.
2. Learn to play some songs. As you master easier songs, move on to more complex pieces. "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd is basically a repetition of D, C, and G in that order, but it sounds much more complex on the record because of the lead guitar licks.
3. Learn how to read guitar tabs. For example, to play "Sweet Home Alabama" by  Lynyrd Skynyrd , you would play two notes on the open D string, the B string at the third fret, the G string at the second fret, etc.

     4.Learn from others.

Well , thats pretty much you need. Just practice the notes and songs regularly and you will be playing like Hendrix in no time!! Thats how I learnt too...
