Hii...
Well ... to be an IAS ..the first thing u need to do is to grab the syllabus and make a keen analysis of it .
Then download the previous year question paper , atleast 10-15 years years for the UPSC site .
Identify and priorities the key topics and understand what kind of question that asked.
After all this stuff , start reading class 6-12 all subjects NCERTs . Get the basic understanding of the correct concepts .
After finishing syllabus , Previous question paper and NCERT , now you are ready to make some vice decision about this exam like which optional to choose, what sources are relevant and so on.
.........
Additionally you can start reading any good newspaper- for improving your reading and writing capabilities , and also to develop an understanding of world around ... and you should/must watch daily news came on telivision...over all you must be in contact of CURRENT AFFAIRS i.e. very necessary for this examination...

Not only in Studies but also in mental abilities and thinking skills. Civil servant is a public servant who need to have an over all idea of the historical, Social, economical, political, Geographical and cultural dimensions of society. The civil service exam is designed to test the candidates ability to deal with the above issues.
The exam is held in three phases :

Generally, Candidates start their preparation after the complete of graduation. It takes at least one year to complete the basic preparation. If you give first attempt after this it takes another year to complete the attempt. It takes a long time.
There fore, if the you start preparing for the exams before graduation then you can save many years. You can prepare well.
Coming to your question,
When you decided after the 10th class. The suggestions for preparation are :
If you decided to start preparing for the civil service after 10th class. Choose some college that can offer intermediate with civil service foundation. The college should have first hand experience of civil service. Then your group should be either History, Economics, Civics ( HEC) or Commerce, Economics, Civics ( CEC) or Maths, Economics, Commerce ( MEC).
The above groups can have compatibility with your preparation. PCM or BIPC are not compatible for the preparation. The core subject in the civil service is Social science. At this time you should start reading NCERT books from 6th to 12th class including history, economics, psychology, sociology etc. These preparations can help you.
