While hilly areas receive normal rainfall/precipitation,because of the geographical features, most of it results in run off.Even highest rainfall areas like Cherapunj,India suffer from drought because of this phenomena.
Research and development in the north eastern states as well as northern hilly states of India indicate the viability of water harvesting as a feasible technology which can change the agricultural viability of these regions. The technology package consiste of:
-construction of a water harvesting pond in a location where maximum run off water can be collected. These ponds are lined with plastics film to prevent seepage losses. These ponds are used for raising fish.
-Plastics pipe system delivers water from these ponds for irrigating fields, green houses and tunnels at lower height through gravity fed drip and sprinkler systems.
This technology has been tested and found effective in dozens of hill settlements.
