Then, the first and last terms, a and d are called as extremes.

The two middle terms, b and c are called as means.

To prove, that the numbers are in proportion,

we have to multiply the extremes, i.e.,a*d,

and also multiply the means, i.e.,b*c.

If,

Product of extremes = Product of means

Then, the numbers are in proportion.
