To share a printer between two computers, both computers need to be connected to the same network. Business networks are usually created using a network router, but you can also create small networks using just two computers and a network cable, thus avoiding the unnecessary expense of buying a router if you have a small office and don't anticipate using more than two computers. To use a printer with two computers and no router, create a computer-to-computer network.

1.

Connect the network cable or crossover network cable to one of the network ports on the first computer. Connect the other end of the cable to a network port on your second computer.

2.

Log in to one of the computers, and then right-click on the network icon in the system tray area of the taskbar. Select "Open Network and Sharing Center" from the context menu, and then double-click the icon next to the "Unidentified network" or "Multiple networks" label.

3.

Click the message bar at the top of the window that says "Network discovery and file sharing are turned off…" and then select the "Turn on network discovery and file sharing" option on the following page. Click "Save changes," and then go back to the "Network and Sharing Center." Click "Change advanced sharing settings," select the "Turn on file and printer sharing" option, and then click "Save changes" again.

4.

Connect the printer to the first computer. Click the "Start" menu, choose "Devices and Printers," right-click on your printer, select "Printer properties," open the "Sharing" tab, and then check the check box labeled "Share this printer."

5.

Open "Devices and Printers" on the second computer, click "Add a printer," select the "Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer" option, click on the printer, click "Next," and then follow the remaining prompts to finish adding the shared printer. Both computers can now use the printer.

Things Needed

Network cable or crossover network cable

Tips

Crossover network cables used to be required when creating a computer-to-computer network, but most newer computer network adapters perform the crossover automatically. Check your network adapters' documentation to find out if they perform the computer-to-computer crossover automatically or not. If they don't, use a crossover network cable instead of a regular network cable. You can find crossover network cables online and at electronics stores.
