How to solve a linear equation (ex. 2x+7=10)
Graphing equations

1) (Information in this problem may not be accurate at all) Some fish can’t or shouldn’t be sold at certain ages. It’s not always easy to tell how old a fish is, but we can get a decent estimate based on its size. Betta fish are roughly 0.1 inch when they hatch and grow at a rate of about 0.2 inches per week. Most sellers will sell bettas that are larger than 1 inch but no more than 3 inches long. How old are the bettas that they are selling?

Represent your solutions
a) algebraically and
b) graphically (on a number line).

Given :  Betta fish are roughly 0.1 inch when they hatch and grow at a rate of about 0.2 inches per week.

Most sellers will sell bettas that are larger than 1 inch but no more than 3 inches long.

To Find :  How old are the bettas that they are selling

Solution:

fish are roughly 0.1 inch when they hatch and grow at a rate of about 0.2 inches per week.

0.1 inch initially

grown every week = 0.2 inches

grown in x weeks = 0.2x  inches

Fish after x weeks  = 0.1  + 0.2x

1  <  0.1  + 0.2x  ≤ 3

=> 0.9  < 0.2x  ≤ 2.9

=>  4.5 < x    ≤  14.5

bettas that they are selling are older than 4.5 weeks but not more than 14.5 weeks old
