In 1935 Japanese scientist H.Yukawa explained the mechanism of interaction of the elementary particles(Neutrons & Protons) in a nucleus. In order to explain his theory he considered a particle known as pions/mesons(π°) and that came to be known as Meson theory.
A pion has two sub particles such as π- & π+.
He explained,A neutron in a nucleus emits out a π-particle and becomes a proton.where as a proton emits a π+ and becomes a neutron, this exchange of particles continues repeatedly.
A Visualisation of reaction-
N+π- →p
P+π+ →N
Due to this exchange of particles there is a strong interactive force existing inside the nucleus.
