Magnetohydrodynamics is the combined effect of electromagnetic and hydrodynamic behavior of a fluid, usually plasma. Plasma is a system in which molecules are individually ionized into positive and negative charges, but collectively neutral. When plasma is under the influence of an external magnetic filed,(such as in the solar atmosphere, where plasma is embedded inside the Sun’s magnetic filed) the behavior of the plasma is governed both by Maxwell’s electromagnetic equations and hydrodynamic equations. Study of such system is comes under magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). Nuclear fusion, solar flares, E,F layers of the Earth’s atmosphere are governed by MHD. Alfven showed for the first time, that the waves in such systems, as MHD waves or Alfven waves.
