PCD = 180- PCB[linear pair]
PCB = 180-a
Now in triangle APE
x + a + 40 = 180
x = 180 - 40- a
x= 140 -a
again in triangle PCD
x + 180-a + 36 = 180
140 - a + 180 - a + 36 = 180
2a = 140 + 36
2a = 176
a= 88
Now x = 140-a = 140 - 88= 52
