great deal of the answer is cultural. In the US you would have the weight of society behind you to more assertively limit the frequency and duration of the visits.
I am not Indian, but from the answers I have read on Quora,if you are Indian this seems to be expected. It also seems to be expected that Mothers in law and daughters in law don't get along. This would be a good reason why.
If you want to change you must enlist your spouse. He/she must be the one to set a specific schedule with the mother about when she can visit and how long she can stay. You will be blamed. . Your spouse will be put in the middle.
If he won't help,make sure your house is immaculate, but put itching powder in her sheets and leave dirty gym shoes under the bed for their fragrance and play Electronic Dance Music loud at her bed time.
