The HCF is the largest factor appearing in both lists.
Eg: HCF of 36 and 48.
36 has factors 1,2,3,4,6,9,12,18.
48 has factors 1,2,3,4,6,8,12,16,24.
the HCF is 12.

Highest common factor is the largest integer that divides the given set of numbers. Suppose we are given N, M and P. Then split N, M and P into their factors by some method. Then select the set or group of factors which are common to all N,M and P.  Let us see an example.

N = 36 = 2 * 2 * 3 * 3
M = 192 = 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 * 3
P = 150 = 2 * 3 * 5 * 5

1. write the prime factors in ascending order, 2 , 3, 5 etc..

2. Select the first common factor = 2.  Circle it in the list of N,M, and P.

3. Select another common factor that appears in all lists above. it is 3.
     Circle that also.

4. Now there are no more factors common to N,M and P remaining.

So our HCF = 2 * 3 = 6
