The Cherry tree is about the joy of the poet on seeing the cherry tree that he had planted some eight years ago which had grown taller. To grow up into a tree it had to undergo a lot of struggle.
The poet talks about the growing tree in comparison to his own growing up. The cherry plant had just been watered, but it had to face the struggle to grow up into a tree in all its oddities. At times there were animals that would eat its leaves, rain used to play a spoil sport by making it difficult to grow but nothing stopped the cherry tree from growing. The poet had to go to Kashmir for some time. He was sick when he came back, but when he looked at the Cherry tree that stood tall, he was very overjoyed at his own creation over a period of eight years. He wonders at nature which takes care of itself and survives all turmoil to stand upright, here the Cherry tree.
