- The reactants are written in the LHS
- The Products are written in the RHS
- Physical states of the chemicals involved in the reaction are written in brackets.
E.g. (s) for Solids, (l) for liquids, (g) for gases,
(aq) for aqueous solution, & (ppt.) for precipitate.
- The reactants and the products are separated using an arrow "→". It determines the Direction of the occurrence of a reaction.
- The Masses and the charges are balanced using the coefficients as Integers.
- The condition of the reaction is mentioned above/below the arrow.
For Example,
• Magnesium reacts with Oxygen to give Magnesium Oxide
⇒2Mg (s) + O₂ (g) ⟶ 2MgO (s)
• Silver Chloride decomposes into Silver and Chlorine gas in presence of sunlight.
⇒2AgCl (s) ⟶ˢᵘⁿˡⁱᵍʰᵗ⟶ 2Ag (s) + Cl₂ (g)↑
• Sodium hydroxide reacts with Hydrochloric acid to give Sodium Chloride and water.
⇒NaOH(aq) + HCl(aq) ⟶ NaCl(aq)+H₂O(l)
