here is ur answer...
valancy: the combining capacity of a atom is known as valancy of that element........
to write valancy to a particular element.there are some rules .... mainly we can write valancy by outer shell electrons or valance electrons...
eg. carbon= 2,4
the outer shell electrons are 4.so the valancy of carbon is 4.. this rule is not applicable to all other elements...
by subshells s, p, d, f we can write valancy of elements by electronic configuration of orbitals...
beryllium=4= 1s² 2s².. here valancy is 2..
