The moment arm is also known as the lever arm of a force system is the perpendicular distance from an axis to the action line of a force.  

In other words, a moment of the arm mainly determines the torque quality.  

A significant concept to learn is that the moment arm varies with the angle of application of the force (angle of insertion).
