USA became the bread basket of the world by transforming the vacant, fertile land of the prairies for cultivation of maize, wheat and soybean. Gradually farming was mechanised and better seeds were introduced; this increased the yields even more. So, USA continued to produce food grains far in excess of its own requirement.
The westward expansion of settlers in the 19th century and annexation of territory from Mexico made it possible for farming to spread with the help of abundant slave labour. Death, due more to diseases than in war, of the native Americans, helped the settlers carry out farming in a big way without much local resistance
