Structure formula :

  • Affirmative => Subject + had + Verb Third form + Object
  • Negative => Subject + had + not + verb third form + Object
  • Interrogative => Had + subject + Verb third form + object + ?

Uses of past perfect tense

1) For action complete report certain time, movement in past

For example - I went to Agra last Sunday I had visited Taj Mahal three time before. (visit)

2) For two action => One action happen before another action and the other action happen after the first action. First action is written in past perfect and second action is simple past.

For example - The Patient had died before the doctor came ( Die, come)

3) In impossible conditional sentence

For example - If you had played well, you would have won the match ( play)

Note : if sentence have If + would /could /should etc + have + verb third form.

Now we learn trick for this tense mainly use -

=> 1) Before then blank ................ then definitely fill simple past

=> 2) After then bank................... then definitely fill Past perfect
