The poem Upagupta by Rabindranath  Tagore demonstrates the impermanence of sensuous pleasures, and the root cause of sorrow is a connection to material pleasures etc.and several such spiritual and philosophical  truths. Tagore achieves that through the events of a dancing girl's life with an ascetic named Upagupta.

This poem depicts two pahses of the dancing girl's life. The dancing girl comes in the dark evening and sees Upagupta, who was Buddha's disciple, and  she welcomes him in her house. Upagupta declines to invite her to say, "I'll come to you when the time is ripe." Her youth  and beauty is characterized as something she is proud of. After a long time, she encountered again the Ascetic when she was struck and expelled from the city as she wastruck with black pestilence. The ascetic comes and supports her. He says it's time to come to her.

The two moments in the girl's life are the two cardinal stages of her life, two important stages in her life. The poem may appear to be without movement, but it does have both the inner and the outer life of the girl who dances. In her life there is a great transformation.

Explanation:

  • The qualities were he was Buddha's disciple and was leading clear and strict ways of life according to Buddhist principles. He had sacrificed the material world. Buddhist monks typically lead a simple, stringent lifestyle. Their life is not glamorous. Simple way of life is needed. So it was a monk Upagupta. He slept on the dusty floor
  • When the dancing girl was struck with a deadly disease and was shunned by the villagers Upagupta nursed the girl back. On seeing her lie down in the shadow of grove, he took her. Sitting next to her, he took her head on his knees. He gave her water and wet her lips. And then he applied sandal on her entire body. This showed Upagupta's selfless attitude and his concern for other people.
  • Thus the dancing girl was inspired by Upagupta. She realised a person known by his/her behaviour and actions. His/her acts reflect the uniqueness of his/her characters. The theory of simple life and high thinking in life should be upheld. Beauty is only short-term. People remember only good deeds done by a human. After his death these deeds continue to live.
