Explanation:
Robert clive defeated bengal nawab siraj- ud- aula
Answer:
While the British East India Company was busy in the South, trying to put and end to the French political aspirations in India, problems started in Bengal between the Company and the Nawab of Bengal, Siraj-ud-Daulah.
The Nawab attacked the English factory in Kasimbazar, in June 1756 and captured it. It finally resulted in the a decisive battle (known as Battle of Plassey which took place in 1757.) between the two sides in which Siraj-uh-Daulah was badly defeated and later killed.
It paved the way for British conquest of Bengal. The victory of British in the Battle transformed the British East India Company from a trading concern to a strong contender for political power in India. By the Treaty of Alinagar, the English got back all their fort , got the rights to fortify Calcutta and were also granted more land and financial rewards by the new ruler.
Circumstances Leading to the battle:
- Murshid Quli Khan followed by Alivardi Khan established themselves as strong rulers after the death of Aurangzeb. They refused the company to grant them several concessions and stopped them from extending its fortifications at the trading post in Hooghly.
- Dastaks were the passes using which commercial goods of the company could be transported without paying taxes in the region. But, the company's servants started misusing it and as a result, the state of Bengal started losing a big amount of revenue.
- The Nawab also objected to the fortification activities of their factories by the French and British companies. The French company stopped after the warning, but the British company refused to comply. The British company wanted to fortify it properly to protect it against any possibility of attack.
- The British interfered in the political life of the state and resorted to political conspiracies to the dethrone the Nawab.
