The French society was mainly divided into three estates or levels . The first estate consisted of the Clergy that means the people of the church and they lived a life of luxury without paying any taxes and instead collected a tax from the third estate people. The second estate consisted of the nobility , and they too lived a life of luxury and held important positions in the administration. The life of the third estate people was the most miserable , they had to pay three types of taxes , one to the clergy , one to the state and one to the landowners or landlords.
