In the summer of 1863 Helen went to Washington during the inauguration of President Cleveland, and also visited Niagara the World's Fair. She and Miss Sullivan went to Niagara in March, 1863. It was difficult for Helen to describe her emotions when she stood on the point which overhangs the American Falls and felt the air vibrate and the earth tremble. She recalled with unmixed delight those days when a thousand childish fancies became beautiful realities. Everyday in her imagination she had made a trip round the world, and had seen many wonders from the uttermost parts of the earth—marvels of invention, treasuries of industry and skill and all the activities of human life actually passed under her finger tips.
