In August 1947, the Drafting Committee was set up, under Dr. B.R.Ambedkar. This Committee's job was to write the Constitution. On 26 November 1949, the final Draft of the Constitution was adopted by the Constituent Assembly. The Constitution of India came into force on 26 January 1950.

The Constitution of India was framed by a Constituent Assembly set up under the Cabinet Mission Plan of 1946. The Assembly consisted of 389 members representing provinces (292), states (93), the Chief Commissioner Provinces (3) and Baluchistan (1).
