1) Rowlatt Act was an oppressive Act introduced by the British government in 1919. It gave the government enormous powers to repress political activities and allowed detention of political prisoners without trial for two years. (2) Indians disapproved this Act in the following ways : (i) Rallies were organised in various cities, workers went on strike in railways, workshops and offices were closed down. (ii) A peaceful protest meeting was organised at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar. (Hi) Gandhiji started a hartal against this unjust law on 6th April, 1919. (iv) Dr. Satyapal and Dr. Saif-ud-din Kitchlew were arrested. (v) Jallianwala Bagh massacre occurred against the arrest of these leaders.
