Silas Marner: The Weaver of Raveloe is George Eliot’s third novel, published in 1861.
The novel is about Silas Marner, a weaver living in a slum street in a Northern England city. William Dane and Silas Marner are best friends in the story and they took turns to sit by the church deacon’s bedside while he was ill. William Dane is known to have framed Silas Marner in the death of the church deacon.
The night when Silas was by the deacon’s side, the deacon passed away in his shift. Dane arrived later with the minister and accused Silas. They found his pocketknife in the deacon’s bureau, from where the church’s money was stolen.
