How was the burglar caught

Sadly, burglars are difficult to catch and burglary is incredibly difficult to prove. Many offences take place whilst the homeowners are away from home. Unless, the offender leaves behind, fingerprints or other forensic evidence, or the homeowner has CCTV (and the offender doesn't wear a face covering) then it could be a struggle. Old fashioned detective works such as house to house enquiries that might turn up a vehicle and number plate, covert human intelligence sources (CHIS) etc could assist as could tracing the fencing of stolen items. Many offences of burglary are detected by interviewing offenders who are caught and they admit the offences in order to "wipe the slate clean". Catching burglars in the act is also, unfortunately rare.
