In the beginning, the commercial relation between India and Europe was established via the land route through the Oxus Valley or Egypt or Syria. When the new sea route via the Cape of Good Hope was discovered in 1498 by Vasco da Gama, many trading companies came to India and established their trading centres here. Though they entered India as traders, they eventually involved themselves in the politics of India and established their own colonies. The commercial rivalry among European powers led to political rivalry and ultimately, the British succeeded in establishing their rule in India.
