The boys were deeply affected by the war. Not only did they experience the trauma and suffering that is brought about by war, but had also lost their father in it. Their house was bombed during the war which brought them on the streets which worsened their situation. The children had always known a life of comfort and sufficiency thus, it was a very difficult situation for them to deal with. Above that they had to struggle with cold winter and starvation. They somehow managed to survive in the make-do shelter that they themselves had bulit amidst the rubble. When they returned to their sister after the war, they found her suffering from tuberculosis of the spine. Thus, the war had deeply affected them. It had completely transformed their lives. The war introduced the boys to a life of constant struggle and hardwork. Despite such magnanimous change that they went through, the boys grew up strong, able and honest.
