During the reign of the Delhi Sultanate the society consisted of foreign Muslims, Indian Muslims and Hindus. The foreign Muslims belonged to the ruling class. They enjoyed a number of privileges and had a lot of influence in society and administration.

The Indian Muslims were the people who had been converted to Islam. Foreign Muslims looked down upon them. They were not given an equal status with the foreign Muslims in society or in administration.

The Hindus were divided on the basis of castes.

Both Hindus and Muslims contributed to the development of art, architecture and music during the period. People lived a prosperous life. According to the accounts of foreign travellers people used ornaments made of gold, pearls, silver, diamonds and other precious stones. The Sultans of Delhi, governors, nobles, merchants and elites of the society owned a lot of wealth and enjoyed material comforts.
