How was the lungs designed in human beings to maximize the area for the exchange of gases?

In the lungs the bronchioles terminate in balloon like structure called alveoli.the alveoli contains network of blood cappilaries that increase the surface area for exchange of gases.Lungs are divided into smaller components called alveolar sacs where the major process of gas exchange takes place.
