The Constitution of India was drafted by the Constituent Assembly which was established in the year 1946 under the prerequisites of the Cabinet Mission Plan. Initially, this assembly had 389 members. Most of them were chosen by the Provincial Assemblies and some of them were made nominees by the chiefs of the native states. However, the partition of India in the year 1947 resulted in a decrease in its membership from 389 to 308. Thus, it may be said that the Partition of India was the main reason be-hind the reduction in the members of the Constituent Assembly.
