How was the narrator lost in the strom cloud

( i think this is from the chapter black aeroplane )
=> the narrator was flying over france to england and after covering about 150 kms from Paris the narrator was faced with big stormy clouds , he didnt have enough fuel to fly over it nor around it , and he desperately wanted the english breakfast so he decided to take the risk and go through the stormy clouds , however as he entered the stormy clouds the aeroplane twisted and turned and all he could see outside him was black - pitch black . He also found out that none of the equipments inside the aeroplane were working , the compass , the radio etc . , hence he got lost in the storm cloud
