The poet felt honored by the snake. He thought himself to be lucky enough to get a chance to show his hospitality to the God's creature. He felt that the snake was his guest and showing the snake courtesy was a matter of honour for him.

When someone seeks one's hospitality, one must feel honoured. The Snake had come to the poet's water trough to quench his thirst, thus becoming a guest to the poet. The poet had a chance to be hospitable to his new and respected guest and was thus honoured.
