The scene in school in the morning of the last lesson  different from that on other days. On other days there used to be lots of bustle at the school. The opening and  closing of desks, lessons repeated in unison,  and the  teacher’s great ruler rapping on the table, etc. usually created noise at school.

However, as he reached the school, he found an unusual silence there; everything was solemnly quiet. As he reached his class, he saw the students already sitting inside; M. Hamel was pacing up and down; he was wearing his best clothes. He felt embarrassed at being late.
