The Indian National Movement was not a monolithic movement. It was in fact a microcosm of several struggles and movements that went on alternately and even simultaneously. Even the premier nationalist organization, the Indian National Congress, had several parties and ideological cliques within it. This resulted in its members participating in several popular struggles. In the native states also, several struggles were launched by Indians against exploitation. And it was through these common yet disparate struggles that a sense of collective identity and national belonging arose among the Indians.
