The summer of 1887 was special for Helen. It was at that time that Anne Sullivan unlocked the world to Helen. While they were walking in the garden, Miss Sullivan put Helen's hand under a spout of water. As the cool stream of water gushed over Helen's hand, Miss Sullivan spelled the word "water" on the other. Helen realized that water meant that 'cool something that was flowing over her hand'. She experienced the joy of learning. After that she learnt several new words.

During the summer trip to the banks of the Tennessee River, sitting on the warm grass Helen learned many things. She learned how birds make their nests, how trees grow with the help of the sun and rain, how animals find food for themselves and many other things. Thus she learned the joy of nature.
