The French society was organized by the three estates.

The first estate was the Clergy which includes big business man, merchants, court officials lawyers etc.

The second estate was the Nobility which includes Peasants and artisans.

The third was the Clergy which includes small peasants and landless labourers.

• Peasants made up about 90% of the population.

• Only small number of them owened the land they cultivated.

• About 60% of land was owened by the Nobles, Church and the other rich membersbpf the third estate.

• The members of the first two estate enjoyed certain privileges from birth.
