Italian cities developed a mercantile fleet and became major trading centers in the Mediterranean. The towns in Flanders were ideally located for northern European traders. A trade association developed in the Baltic North Sea region called the Hanseatic League. By the 1100’s, regular trade had developed between Flanders and Italy. Trade fairs were initiated to encourage trade and eventually a money economy developed. Trading companies and banking firms emerged as well.
