The water energy is converted into electricity in a water turbine, by the following process -

• The continuous water flow has some amount of kinetic energy in it.

• We use this continuous flow of kinetic energy to rotate the shaft of the energy producing dynamo which is attached with the rotating water turbine.

• So,the water flow rotates the water turbine and the water turbine rotates the shaft of the dynamo which later produces electricity through the electromagnetic induction principle.

Principle of  hydroelectricity (water energy):

  • The principle of hydroelectricity is that the potential energy of the water stored at high altitudes in the dam is converted into kinetic energy by allowing the water to flow at high speed.
  • Then the kinetic energy of the flowing water is used to generate electricity.
  • In a hydroelectric plant, the water that flows in the upper rivers is stopped by the construction of dams and stored in a huge reservoir behind the dam.
  • The stored water had a large amount of potential energy.
  • The water can then fall through pipes on the blades of water, called turbines.
  • These turbines are connected to electric generators.
  • When the turbine shaft rotates, the generator coil also spins quickly and generates electricity.
