water is transported in upward through xylem vessels.

but how the process takes place

ASCENT OF SAP ( USUALLY OCCURS IN BIG WOODY TREES):
( IN CASE OF HERBACEOUS SMALL PLANTS ----PRIMARYTRACHEARY ELEMENTS ARE INVOLVED )
This is the process by which the translocation of water and minerals occurs in a plant by xylem and phloem(tracheary elements ) , against all the gravitational force , where water ascends upwards
IN OTHER SIMPLE WORDS FROM THE ROOT TO SHOOT TIP AGAINST THE EARTHS PULL GRAVITATIONAL FORCE!!
HOW DOES THIS WORK?????
It is too uneasy to say that the water just travels upwards by ascent of sap , usually how does this thing work ?, like water cannot go up on its own right there must a driving force that makes the water ascend through the xylem and the minerals to translocate through the phloem ,
this driving force is called as transpiration pull , transpiration makes the water flow towards the shoot from the root --this is also listed as one of the advantages of transpiration ( so there is after all a reason for transpiration to occur )
HOW DOES TRANSPIRATION PULL DO IT ANYWAYS??
Transpiration pull involves physical properties like :
1.) COHESION AND ---( MUTUAL ATTRACTION BETWEEN WATER MOLECULES)
2.) ADHESION ( ATTRACTION BETWEEN WATER MOLECULES AND SURFACES OF TRACHEARY ELEMENTS)
These properties give water high capillarity and tensile strength to travel to the shoot tip
By the transpiration continuously occuring the water is arranged in a thin film over the cells hence the water is pulled drop by drop , which makes it possible for the water to travel all the way up
SORRY FOR MAKING IT ELOBORATED AND NOT ATTACHING ANY PICTURES !!
