Density of the aerogel is calculated by the equation (m/ν), where m was the mass of the sample and ν was the volume. A microbalance (0.01 to 0.001g) should be used to weight the samples since aerogels are very low density objects and the pieces won’t weight very much. For regularly shaped samples, measuring the dimensions with calipers is used to figure out the volume. For irregularly shaped the volume can be measured using a displacement technique using liquids (liquid need to be selected based on hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of the sample). Mercury displacement can be used for such measurements.

Porosity of the aerogel was calculated per the equation P = (1 − ρ*/ρ) × 100%, where ρ* was the density of the aerogel and ρ was theoretical density of cellulose.
