how we can calculate "n factor" for redox reaction?
for example, calculate n factor for this reaction:
I2 + 2Na2S2O3 ==> Na2S4O6 + 2NaI

Answer:

Sodium thiosulphate is very good reductant. When it react with iodine then the reaction is as follow.

I2 + 2Na2S2O3 = Na2S4O6 + 2NaI

At first oxidation number of sulphate atom is +2. After the reaction the oxidation number become +2.5.

In the reaction two sulphate atoms are present. So oxidation number change = 2*0.5 = 1

We know n factor is the oxidation number change in a molecule. So here n factor is +1.
