By killer industry i am assuming you view mining industry as health hazard or accident prone industry. However the basis on which mining is done is “Safety”. Thus mining engineering comes to play.
There is balance of energy /systems inside earth. By doing mining we interfare with balance of forces of nature. To overcome this we have designed various technologies and theories based on experience.
Mining becomes dangerous when we compromise safety. This can be due to several reasons. Behavioural, structural, technical etc there are number of reasons which could cause accidents in mines.
Currently mining industry have become safe on account of new technologies, rules and regulations, control of statutory bodies, risk assessment etc, which are getting better day by day.
On concluding note i want tell you that mining industry is not a killer industry and future of mining is even better.
