We know that the outermost shell of Calcium must have 8 electrons. But here in the above electronic configuration, we see that the outermost shell has 2 electrons. So to become stable, it will have to gain 6 electrons or loose 2 electrons. Since gaining 6 electrons is more difficult task as it involves large amount of energy so calcium will prefer to Loose two electrons to become stable. So it's valency is +2 where the + sign indicates that the electrons are lost
