The easiest way in a laboratory is using a separatory funnel (see image below).

For the most part oils are less dense than water and so float on top in a separate phase.

Using a separatory funnel the bottom phase can be removed leaving the top phase to be later poured into a different flask, thus separating them.

2. To separate a mixture of oil and water, we need a separating funnel as both are immiscible liquids. Pour the mixture in separating funnel and let the funnel stand undisturbed for sometime. So that separate layer of oil and water are formed.
