Solution:

Let us consider the whole cake as 1. It had 8 slices and Maria ate 3 slices.

Hence, out of 8 slices 3 were consumed and the number of slices left will be balance 5 slices i.e. 8 - 3 = 5 slices.

Hence, the fraction of slices consumed $=\frac{3}{8}$

The fraction of slices left $=\frac{5}{8}$

If we add $\frac{3}{8}+\frac{5}{8}$, we get

$\frac{3}{8}+\frac{5}{8}=\frac{8}{8}=1$.
