How were steam-powered ships different from sail boats?

Steam Powered boats involve the process of conversion of water into vapors through the use of coal, wood, etc. These vapors exert pressure and help to turn the mechanism of the boat, whereas,

sailboat move with the help of wind. They have a flap like structure with large surface area which helps in turning the direction of the ship and do other functions.
