How were the heavy elements from iron to uranium made?

Uranium is a by-product of a supernova explosion. In a stars nuclear furnace, hydrogen gas is fused with itself to create helium. Once they hydrogen runs out, helium begins to fuse with itself to form heavier elements up to iron.
